Where Project Historian gets its answers

Ask it in plain English. It does not crawl every file on the project. It answers from the evidence the field and office already put in BalanceBuild Pro:

  • Daily logs: work completed, crew notes, weather, delay notes, and the superintendent's voice transcript from that day.
  • Official team correspondence: in-app alerts and team dialogue, including who told whom and when.
  • Delay records: weather and production delays logged on the job and against specific schedule tasks.
  • Change orders plus the field evidence linked to them: daily logs, RFIs, and photos.

Daily-log photos can ride along on an exported report. Historian does not search drawings, punch lists, or pay apps, and it will not invent a delay story if the logs are thin.

Where BalanceBuild Pro wins, and what we will not copy

When we say true CPM, we mean the schedule can use all four activity links, not only a bar chart. Schedulers write FS, SS, FF, and SF. Here is what those mean on a job. Lag is wait time between linked activities (concrete cure). Lead is overlap.

Finish-to-Start (FS)
Activity B cannot start until A is finished. Framing done, then drywall. This is the default on almost every commercial job.
Start-to-Start (SS)
Activity B cannot start until A has started. Underground plumbing can start once excavation has started, often with a wait (lag) for the trench to open.
Finish-to-Finish (FF)
Activity B cannot finish until A has finished. Commissioning cannot finish until the last piece of equipment is set.
Start-to-Finish (SF)
Rare on commercial jobs. Activity B cannot finish until A has started: for example, a temporary power feed stays live until permanent power is energized.

BalanceBuild Pro vs Procore®

Enterprise commercial PM for large GCs who will pay a construction-volume tax and staff a 12-month rollout.

Where we win

  • Voice daily logs, weather delay evidence, and Project Historian in the same system as AIA pay apps.
  • True CPM with Finish-to-Start, Start-to-Start, Finish-to-Finish, and Start-to-Finish links, plus lag / lead and a data date, instead of a communication Gantt that still needs P6 beside it.
  • Public $49 / $199 pricing and a written 12-month price lock. Time to live in days, not months.
  • Ball-in-court plus digest notifications so the field is not buried in alerts.

What we will not copy

  • We do not match Procore's BIM ecosystem, 500-app marketplace, or ENR-scale ERP connectors. Mid-size commercial GCs should not need that stack to run the job.

BalanceBuild Pro vs Buildertrend®

Residential home builders and remodelers who need selections, homeowner portals, and warranty more than CSI pay apps.

Where we win

  • Built for commercial GCs: CSI SOV, AIA G702 / G703, RFIs, submittals, and weather delay defense.
  • Voice logs with retained audio, not a residential daily-log form.
  • True CPM with MSP / P6 XML when an owner asks for an electronic schedule.
  • Flat commercial pricing from $49 / month instead of a residential SKU that still is not AIA-first.

What we will not copy

  • We are not a residential selections, takeoff, or homeowner-warranty product. If you build custom homes, keep Buildertrend.

BalanceBuild Pro vs Contractor Foreman®

Small contractors who want a cheap all-in-one with public pricing and AIA-style billing on a paid plan.

Where we win

  • Commercial-tuned field: 6-second voice pause, audio kept for claims, Open-Meteo holds on the same timeline as the schedule.
  • Project Historian search of daily logs, team messages, delay records, and linked change-order evidence when owners, insurers, or counsel ask hard questions.
  • True CPM with Finish-to-Start, Start-to-Start, Finish-to-Finish, and Start-to-Finish links, lag / lead, and XML round-trip, not only a Gantt that cannot leave the product.
  • Phone lookahead, punch PDFs per sub, and a 12-month public price lock.

What we will not copy

  • We are not a 35-module small-business kitchen sink. Estimating takeoff, certified payroll, and equipment fleets are not the product.

BalanceBuild Pro vs Microsoft Project®

Generic project scheduling inside Microsoft 365. Useful Gantt. Not a construction system of record.

Where we win

  • Daily logs, photos, punch, RFIs, and AIA pay apps live next to the CPM, not in a second spreadsheet.
  • A confirmed weather or production delay on the log reschedules successors. The superintendent does not email a .mpp around.
  • MSP XML in and out so BalanceBuild Pro is not a lock-in trap when an owner still wants a Project file.

What we will not copy

  • If you only need a generic Gantt for non-construction work, keep Microsoft Project.

BalanceBuild Pro vs Primavera® P6®

Specialist CPM for mega-projects and owners who mandate XER. A scheduler's desktop, not a jobsite.

Where we win

  • Readable CPM the superintendent can update on a phone, with a 3-week lookahead.
  • Delay confirmation from the daily log moves successors. You do not wait for the P6 specialist to republish.
  • XML / PDF export so you can still hand an owner an electronic schedule.

What we will not copy

  • We are P6-lite for mid-market commercial GCs, not a mega-project resource-leveling suite.

Comparison FAQ

Does BalanceBuild Pro replace Procore?

For mid-size commercial GCs who need daily logs, CPM, AIA pay apps, and delay evidence without a 12-month implementation, yes. We do not replace Procore's BIM marketplace or ENR-scale ERP connectors. That is a different buyer.

Is Buildertrend a competitor for commercial GCs?

Buildertrend is built for residential home builders: selections, homeowner portals, and warranty. Commercial GCs who need CSI SOV, AIA G702 / G703, RFIs, and weather delay defense should not buy a residential SKU and hope it stretches.

Contractor Foreman already has AIA billing. Why BalanceBuild Pro?

Contractor Foreman is a capable small-contractor all-in-one at a low published price. BalanceBuild Pro is commercial-tuned: voice evidence kept for claims, Open-Meteo holds tied to the schedule, Project Historian search, true CPM with MSP / P6 XML, and a 12-month public price lock.

Can BalanceBuild Pro replace Microsoft Project or Primavera P6?

It replaces the two-tool tax of a specialist schedule plus Excel plus a field app for most mid-size commercial jobs. Superintendents update a real CPM. When an owner requires an electronic schedule, export MSP / P6 XML. We are not a mega-project leveling suite.

What does Project Historian actually search?

Daily logs (work, crew, weather, delay notes, and the voice transcript), official team correspondence inside the product, delay records on the job and on schedule tasks, and change orders plus the daily logs, RFIs, and photos linked to them. It is not a search of drawings, punch lists, or pay apps.

Procore also sells BIM, a large app marketplace, and ERP connectors as separate enterprise products. Mid-size commercial GCs should not need that stack to run the job. Comparison reflects publicly described product positioning as of 2026 and BalanceBuild Pro capabilities we ship: AI daily logs, Project Historian, weather delay defense, true CPM, CSI pay apps, field drawings, punch walks, and MSP / P6 XML. We do not claim live ERP / QuickBooks sync, payroll, bid / prequal, or BIM.
